COMMUNICATION
WITHIN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Newsletters and other information are sent home with the progress
and semester grade reports. Teachers all have e-mail (addresses
listed in the staff section) and also can be reached by leaving
a phone message with Ms. Barraford. There is a CHAPA communication
committee with phone tree to help with getting information.
RESOLVING ISSUES AT CORTEZ HILL ACADEMY
Problem solving, conflict resolution and good communication skills
are important to all of our success at Cortez Hill Academy(CHA)—students,
teachers, family members and administrators alike. Conflict happens.
We wish to understand each other and provide a positive problem-solving
model for our learners. We ask for your support and cooperation
by using the following process for resolving conflicts.
1. If you or your child has a problem with a teacher, please make
an appointment to talk by phone or meet in person with the teacher.
Call the office with a phone number and a good time to reach you.
Teachers are best able to return phone calls after 3:30 pm.
2. If you are uncomfortable meeting alone with the teacher, please
ask to meet with the teacher and the Assistant Counselor, Kim Crossno
or the Principal, Jackie Hicks. If you need Spanish translation,
Astrid Ramos-Hall is available to assist. The teacher is responsible
for returning your call and setting up the meeting with the three
of you. The teacher will ask if you wish to include another person
in the meeting.
3. If the problem still remains, ask for a meeting with the CEO,
Linda Reed. Call the office, if she is not available immediately,
leave your number and a good time for her to reach you.
4. We hope by now the problem is solved. If not, the next step is
to talk with Dr. Will Stillwell. He is an excellent listener, a
professional mediator and a member of the Cortez Hill Academy Board
of Directors. Leave a message for him at the CHA office. He will
return your call.
5. During your meeting with Dr. Stillwell, the two of you can decide
if it is necessary to bring the problem to the CHA Board of Directors.
If so, please put the item on the agenda by calling the office or
mailing the request to be heard. The board will put your issue on
their agenda for the next meeting.
6. Because our Charter school is a non-profit educational corporation
(or we are a Charter school), the San Diego Unified School Board
does not provide any daily operational oversight to Cortez Hill
Academy and therefore cannot offer any satisfaction for problems
which occur at Cortez Hill Academy. The CHA Board of Directors is
the final decision-maker in our agreement with the Charter and the
State of California.
